GUIDELINES FOR DETERMINING SKIN ISSUES & TYPES

AGE & SKIN COLOR HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SKIN TYPES

With Maria Garcia Skin Care, our goal is to provide you with the knowledge of proper skin care habits. This knowledge will help you achieve maximum anti-aging benefits. Although we can not stop the aging process, we can combat the signs of aging right now.

Every person has the potential to have sensitive skin. Although there are many different skin issues, one should always treat their skin gently to prevent the development of irritated or sensitive skin. If your skin looks or feels inflamed and or irritated, re-evaluate your skin care products to try and find the source. Your skin may also change from season to season, so your skin care routine will need to adapt to that factor. When introducing new products to your skin care routine, do it one or two at a time so you will know what product is causing irritation. Typically irritation will occur soon after first use.

Regardless of age or color of skin, the range of skin issues are the same, and the same products are used to address those issues. Although a variety of ethnic backgrounds may have some distinct skin care issues, i.e. oily or dry, options in skin care are more related to the need your skin has and how to counteract the issue. As for age, products marketed toward “mature skin” meaning dry skin and for “20 something” meaning oily or problematic skin is not always accurate. You can be over 50 years of age and have oily skin or any other variation for that matter, and a person who is 10 to 40 years of age can have dry skin or any other variation as well. The marketing is supposed to take the confusion away. But it simply causes more problems for your skin.

In the section, Skin Care Routines, you will notice the lack of complicated steps to have a great complexion. Your skin can only take so much and needs very little to achieve maximum benefits. Although it can be enticing to have over 40 products to choose from within one skin care range, it can also be redundant and confusing. The wrong product(s) can actually cause you to have new skin care issues that will of course make you need another product to fix it. Perhaps that is why a skin care company would have 30, 40, 50 or more products just for the face, because the products lead you from one to another.

SKIN ISSUES (types)

SENSITVE SKIN:

Sensitive skin can be thinner, more delicate that flushes easily and is more prone to broken capillaries. Sensitive skin can be combined with any other skin issue(s) we will review.

OILY:

Oily skin is typically shiny and can have a greasy feeling with or without enlarges pores. Interestingly, you may at times feel tightness. Blackheads and blemishes are typical for oily skin, but not always the case. To assess if you have oily skin, look in the mirror six hours after you wake up to see how oily your skin looks.

OILY/COMBO:

For the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) the same comments apply as with the oily skin description, while the rest of your face and neck is normal, slightly dry or dry. These skin issues take the most effort to care for because you need to treat your T-Zone with different products than the rest of the face and neck. Your skin will typically have a smooth texture and a healthy glow due to good circulation. To assess if you have oily/combination skin, look in the mirror six hours after you wake up to see how oily your skin looks and feels.

NORMAL:

Normal skin is subjective because depending on the weather, hormonal changes and sleep, even normal skin can vary. Typically normal skin has very few visible pores, smooth even skin tone and a healthy glow due to good circulation.

DRY:

Your skin usually feels tight, possibly itchy. You may or may not experience flakey red patches. If proper exfoliation does not take place regularly, your skin can appear dull from dead skin sells that have built up. It is a myth that drinking more water will make your skin less dry, unless you are very ill and are dehydrated, which we usually aren’t. You will need to moisturize your skin at least 2 times per day with an emollient moisturizer to trap moisture in, and you will benefit from the use of a creamy cleanser and an intensive hydrating mask 1-3 times per week.

VERY DRY/DEHYDRATED:

The same comments apply to very dry skin as with dry skin, with added discomfort. Your skin typically feels very uncomfortable due to tightness that can cause irritation, i.e. itchiness, more obvious flaking skin as well as red patches. These particular skin issues require more diligent moisturizing and the use of a soothing cream cleanser and an intensive hydrating mask 3 times per week. To jump start relief you can use a hydrating mask 7 days in a row.

SUN DAMAGED:

Typically your skin feels tight and the signs of aging to the skin are pronounced. The skin will have a thicker texture and possibly broken capillaries. Even though you are experiencing the effects of sun damage that as occurred from years past, you can greatly benefit from the use of an SPF product for future years. A proper skin care routine will immediately help alleviate the signs of aging and sun damage while slowing down the effects of the aging process in the future.
